This position is one of learning, practice and retaining of the basic tool making skills and knowledge leading up to a practicing Journeyman status.  To include the understanding, principles and applications of basic Blanking Tools, Forming Tools and Assembly Tools.  Assists Journeyman & Master Toolmakers with steel tooling component preparations.


  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of experience as a Machinist Trainee or Vocational School diploma
  • Understanding of basic math
  • Good communication & Team Skills


  • Has a clear understanding of general safety and machine shop equipment practices and operations.
  • Proficiently interpret 2-D dimensioned drawings including the final inspection of finished parts to prints.
  • Proficient with the use of all shop precision measuring instruments.
  • Has a clear understanding of the various grades of tool steels and the relative applications of the same.
  • Is proficient with the methods and procedures for heat treating tool steels to proper working tempers.
  • Has a good applicable understanding of basic shop math including fractions and decimal equivalents
  • Understands general shop and equipment application for basic machining operations.
  • Able to effectively drill/tap and ream die blocks.
  • Includes some assembly and mounting of basic single operation tooling
  • Learn the procedures for threading on a Lathe
  • Able to validate machined component accuracies using digitizer and/or optical comparator.
  • Able to produce simple tools (pointed and three sided) using tool/cutter grinder.
  • Other duties as assigned
